Element 22 · Transition Metal

Titanium

Period 4 · Group 4

Titanium is a chemical element with symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is a lustrous transition metal with a silver color, low density and high strength. It is highly resistant to corrosion in sea water, aqua regia and chlorine.

Three reasons Titanium stands out

  1. 1

Known for its high strength-to-weight ratio.

  2. 2

It is fully biocompatible with the human body, making it ideal for surgical implants and prosthetics.

  3. 3

The SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, the fastest jet ever built, was constructed from about 85% of this metal.

Strength without surrendering lightness

Titanium has the strength expected of a heavy structural metal but a much lower density than steel. A tenacious oxide film protects it from corrosion, even in seawater and the body. Those traits connect jet-engine components, chemical equipment, artificial joints, and the brilliant white pigment titanium dioxide.
